Notes of a Fashionista

Welcome to my new weekly newsletter; Notes of a Fashionista.

The Daily Skimm inspired this publication; I want to share a weekly trend report that can be read quickly. If you’d like to read more about the topics covered, there will be links. Some links will be to my blog, and some will be to other sources.

I read articles daily about everything that is trending. I will pull out the most talked about topics and share them with you. The blurbs I’ll include will mostly fit into two categories: fashion and lifestyle. Posts will cover what to wear (clothing and accessories that are trending) and lifestyle choices (watch to watch, what to try, where to go, etc.) I will keep out heavy news-related topics; this should be light, fun reading. Think of it as good water cooler talk. Remember when people worked in offices and met up at the water cooler during a break? You could also call it cocktail party chatter, another activity on hiatus, but maybe this one is slowly making a comeback.

Starting tomorrow, I will publish a newsletter every Friday. Eventually, there will be an option to subscribe.

Here is my first publication from last week, only shared with friends and family as a draft:

Five on Friday

April 22, 2022

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” —Jane Goodall

One: Earth Day 4/22/22

April 22nd is Earth Day, which started in 1970. Read about its origin: https://www.earthday.org/history/.

I try to take steps to help the Earth, but it can be hard to lead an environmentally friendly life.

Here are some things you can do:

  1. Recycle and Reuse (bags, water bottles, etc.)
  2. Eat more plant-based foods and buy plant-based products
  3. Compost
  4. Buy sustainable fashion, clothes from thrift stores, or rent clothes
  5. Join a cleanup or donate

Two: What to watch

HBO max – Season 2 of The Flight Attendant, starts on 4/21/22. Only the first two episodes will be released on Thursday. You will have to wait each week to watch newer episodes or wait until 5/28/22 to binge the second season. I have to admit I binge-watched the first season in a day or two. If you haven’t watched it yet, I would label it as a dark comedy/murder mystery. Kaley Cuoco’s performance was fantastic.

Netflix – Anatomy of a Scandal is a British anthology drama miniseries developed by David E. Kelley and Melissa James Gibson for Netflix. It is based on the novel of the same name by Sarah Vaughan. The series consists of six episodes.  The Netflix documentary people are talking about this week: White Hot: The rise and fall of Abercrombie & Fitch. Not a flattering portrait of A & F.

In theaters: The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent starring Nick Cage – as Nick Cage. I’m intrigued by this movie, and I often like when actors play a version of themselves on the screen. For example, I loved Keanu Reeves in Always be my Maybe and James Van Der Beek in Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23.

Everything Everywhere All at Once is also getting great reviews. A sci-fi adventure about a woman trying to finish her taxes might be worth checking out.

Three: What to wear

Some trends from the early 2000s are back in style.

One trend rewind: micro-mini skirts

I first read about this trend after seeing pictures of Nicole Kidman wearing the it on the cover of Vanity Fair.

What is it?  https://www.harpersbazaar.com/fashion/trends/a38655834/micro-miniskirt-trend-2022/

My biggest question is, what do people wear underneath? The skirt pictured above has appeared on runways and in fashion magazines but I don’t see how non-models can pull off this trend (myself included).

Here is one person’s experience trying the trend: https://www.refinery29.com/en-gb/2022/04/10931917/micro-mini-skirt-trend-review

The short trend I can get behind, no pun intended, is Princess Diana’s short and sweatshirt look. This is a perfect spring or fall outfit to be worn while running errands.

Four: Beauty – What to Try

Gel sunscreen $35

My favorite esthetician and friend, Page, introduced me to this product to be used as my daily facial sunscreen. The verdict – I love it! I took Page’s advice to shake it first and only use a tiny dollop. Another Page tip: don’t forget to use it on the top of your hands.

Five: What to do

To give back, volunteer, donate or commit to one earth-friendly activity. Or visit a state park. You can create your own trash clean-up by taking a garbage bag on your next walk and picking up trash as you complete your walk.

If you live in Boston, the Museum of Science has an exhibit about climate change. https://www.mos.org/
