“I see dead people.” – Cole in The Sixth Sense
One: Talking to the Dead

A Haunting in Venice is in theaters this weekend, based on an Agatha Christie book called Hallowe’en Party. The movie finds a retired Poirot at an All Hallows’ Eve séance at a haunted mansion when one of the guests is murdered. The release of this movie inspired the theme for this week’s newsletter: talking to the dead.
Séances and psychics have been around for many years and have been represented in movies and television. Are these events authentic or fake?
Losing a loved one is difficult. Some people would like the chance to communicate with loved ones who have passed. This communication can provide comfort after a devasting loss. Is it possible to talk to the dead?
I went with a friend to see Tyler Henry in Boston. From the Tyler Henry website, During his life-changing Live Show “An Evening of Hope and Healing,” Tyler explains how he communicates with the other side, gives Live Audience Readings, and answers audience questions. Tyler’s incredibly accurate, personal Live Readings of audience members often bring everyone to tears, giving them proof, hope, and understanding that “Our loved ones never really leave us.” During the show we attended, he spoke to several audience members, sharing details about loved ones who had passed. Some conversations were emotional for the people he spoke with, including one woman who wore a jewelry item Tyler identified.

If you are skeptical of seances and psychic readings, you are not alone. It is tough to believe in psychic powers.
From NBC (2009), Movie to ‘Push’ dubious psychic powers. “The idea of people being able to move objects through mind power alone has intrigued people for centuries, though only in the late 1800s did it become popular and seen as an ability that could be demonstrated. This occurred during the heyday of Spiritualism, when psychic mediums claimed to contact the dead during séances, and objects would suddenly and mysteriously move, float, or fly by themselves across the darkened room, untouched by human hands.”
