You can wear black at any time. You can wear it at any age. You may wear it for almost any occasion; a ‘little black frock’ is essential to a woman’s wardrobe.” – Christian Dior

Madame X  (Madame Pierre Gautreau) 1884

Fashioned by Sargent opens at the MFA on October 8, 2023. My family has a membership, and we were able to visit this exhibition early. This is one of my favorite museum exhibits. I like Sargent’s paintings, and I love fashion; this exhibit is a perfect combination.

One of Sargent’s most famous (or infamous) paintings is on display, Madame X. From the MFA, “Sargent and Madame Gautreau worked together to create this portrait, and it’s clearly posed as if she were making an appearance in public. Both he and Madame Gautreu were extremely pleased with it. In fact, Madame Gautreau wrote to a friend that she thought it was a masterpiece. They both felt a little bit differently after the painting appeared in public at the Paris salon.” At the Salon of 1884, the portrait received more ridicule than praise.
