The Hallmark Channel launches its Countdown to Christmas tonight. This event has inspired the topic for my newsletter.

I know it’s October, and there are two more holidays to celebrate, Halloween and Thanksgiving, but now is a great time to prepare for Christmas.

Bodies (mystery/drama series), Four detectives. Four timelines. One victim. In order to save the future, they’ll need to solve the murder that altered the course of history first.

The Devil on Trial (documentary film), The Devil on Trial explores the first – and only – time “demonic possession” has officially been used as a defense in a U.S. murder trial. Including firsthand accounts of alleged devil possession and a shocking murder, this extraordinary story forces reflection on our fear of the unknown. The movie, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, was based on these events.

CHOW (documentary film on 10/22), It’s impossible to deny that Michael Chow has had an interesting life: born in Shanghai, Chow moved to London, where he opened a Chinese restaurant with Italian waiters that catered to British diners. His restaurant, Mr. Chow, now has locations in New York, Miami, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. This documentary film focuses on his life and his recently revealed other identity as an artist who goes by the name “M.” New York Times

Oct. 20 — Checkin’ It Twice, A journeyman hockey player (McGarry) falls for a real estate agent (Matula) in a career crisis when he’s traded to her hometown and moves into the cottage in her hockey loving family’s backyard.

Oct. 21 — Where Are You, Christmas?, When Addy (Fonseca) wishes for a year without Christmas, she wakes up in a world of black and white. She must work together with the town mechanic (Rady) to restore Christmas.

Oct. 22 — Under the Christmas Sky, Kat (Kennedy) is an esteemed astrophysicist, who is scheduled for her first trip into space next year until an accident grounds her. While on leave, coming to terms with the reality that her dream of being an astronaut is over, she volunteers at the local planetarium. There, she is paired up with by-the-book David (Paevey) to work on an exhibit opening right before Christmas. Will the stars align to bring these two together at the holidays?

Paramount+:

Crush (documentary), an immersive two-part documentary taking viewers inside the chaos of a devastating crowd catastrophe that occurred in Seoul in 2022.

Painkiller: The Tylenol Murders (5 part documentary), It’s 1982 and seven people including a child are dead after taking Tylenol laced with cyanide; a paramedic and a nurse rush to piece together the truth.

In Theaters:

Killers of the Flower Moon (crime/drama/mystery), In the 1920s, members of the Osage Native American tribe of Osage County, Oklahoma, are murdered after oil is found on their land, and the FBI decides to investigate. Based on a book by David Grann, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the F.B.I.

Dicks: The Musical (musical/comedy), After discovering they’re long-lost identical twins, two self-obsessed businessmen hatch a scheme to reunite their eccentric, divorced parents.

Tiger Nageswara Rao (drama/crime), During the 1970s, thief Tiger Nageswara Rao masterminds a series of daring heists and becomes a legend for his ingenious methods of outwitting the police.
