There’s nothing new in human experience, Mr. Tully. Each generation thinks it invented debauchery or suffering or rebellion, but man’s every impulse and appetite from the disgusting to the sublime is on display right here all around you. So, before you dismiss something as boring or irrelevant, remember, if you truly want to understand the present or yourself, you must begin in the past. You see, history is not simply the study of the past. It is an explanation of the present.Paul Hunham The Holdovers

Four: What to Try

Subtitles:

I started watching television with subtitles many years ago. My dad introduced me to this experience; I wouldn’t say I liked it initially, but now, I’m hooked. Having subtitles helps when movies and shows have quiet conversations.

From Marie Claire, Hands up, who here is watching TV with subtitles on?

Did you know you can get subtitles in the movie theater?

From 3PlayMedia, Why Advocates Are Calling Out Closed Captions at Movie Theaters and Festivals. The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) states that the two types of captioning equipment available in theaters are Sony Entertainment Access Glasses and CaptiView:

Sony Entertainment Access Glasses is a system in which, captions are sent by a movie theater’s transmitter to a wireless receiver device. Movie patrons wear the glasses while looking at the movie screen and are able to see captions through the lenses. This way, the captions are overlaid on the movie patron’s line of sight.

CaptiView is a small display with a flexible arm that can be attached to the arm of the seat. Closed captions are transmitted to the device and appear on the display screen.
