We need joy as we need air. We need love as we need water. We need each other as we need the earth we share.” —Maya Angelou

One: Find Joy, Happiness, and Laughter

I try to keep politics out of my blog. I want to focus on things that make us happy. Sometimes, it’s hard to find joy, happiness, and laughter in daily life. Your goal for this week: Replace doom-scrolling with things that make you happy, bring you joy, and make you laugh.

I know it’s November. I’m late to this practice, as I can also be late in real life. But you can still use this theory in November and December to get a jump start on your resolutions.

From Real Simple: 6 Ways to Use the ‘October Theory’ to Start Your Resolutions Early (and Why You’d Want To)

From Fortune: How TikTok’s ‘October Theory’ can make you happier and more successful by the end of the year. Taking advantage of the theory can be as simple as integrating micro habits to bring joy, deciding to wear sunscreen every day, practicing mindfulness, or drinking more water.

Five: What to Do

Vote:

Turn back your clocks, on Sunday night, Daylight Saving Time ends:

In Boston (BSide):

Visit the Franklin Park Zoo: meet Ino, Cleo, and Ptolemy, the Franklin Zoo’s trio of pygmy hippos (the same kind as Moo Deng). It turns out that while we’ve all been freaking out about the internet’s favorite sassy hippo in Thailand, there have been three pygmy hippos in Boston all along. And while they might not be quite as sassy, tiny, or plump as our girl Moo Deng (who could be?), these guys are definitely just as adorable, especially the youngest, Ptolemy.

Sip a brew, read a book. Remember those Scholastic Book Fairs back in school? Well, this Saturday’s book fair event at Dorchester Brewing Company is basically that … but with beer, and books from Bookworm, a local, women-owned bookshop.

Find Joy in Boston: Be-In Joy is a gathering where participants are encouraged to foster joy, connection, and practice being in the present. There will be conversation prompts, dancing, and absolutely no bad vibes. Check it out on the Common this Saturday.
