Notes on Watching

The Oscar will air tonight, Sunday, March 2, 2025 at 7 p.m. on ABC, streaming on Hulu, hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien. From Vanity Fair: Your 2025 Oscars Guide: How to Watch on Livestream and TV, Who Will Host & More

See the full list of nominations: The 97th Academy Awards | 2025.

From Rotten Tomatoes: Oscars 2025: Where to Watch the Nominees

Nominated movies I’ve watched:

  • Conclave (streaming on Peacock), Rating: acting A+, drama A+, story A, with an interesting twist at the end.
  • The Substance (rent), Rating: acting A, story B (a little strange, with nods to other horror films), with a gruesome final scene.
  • A Real Pain (on Hulu), Rating: acting A, drama A (an emotional storyline), story A.
  • I’m Still Here (in theaters), Rating: acting A+, drama A+, and story A+. Inspired by actual events, this is a movie worth watching.
  • Inside Out 2 (on Disney+), Rating A, cute story. I loved the new emotions.

Nominated movies on my to watch list: Anora, Sing Sing, and Nickel Boys.

Award season is coming to a close with the Oscars this weekend. I enjoy watching awards shows for movies and television. I watch to see the fashion and styles that the celebrities wear, but I also like to see who will win the awards. Predicting the winners is fun, especially if you are watching with friends and family members.

Years ago, I participated in a pool where you put money behind your predictions. Each correct guess earned you points, and the person with the highest score won the pool. These days, I mostly fill out a ballot with guesses.

If you are interested in filling out a ballot:

Predictions:

From Variety: SAG Awards Blow the Oscar Race Wide Open as Timothée Chalamet, ‘Conclave’ Surge in Wildest Awards Season in Years

From Vanity Fair: Oscars 2025: See Our Predictions for Every Winner

This is the first year I haven’t seen many of the nominated performances and movies. I watched the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards to get a feel for who might win. Kieran Culkin seems to be a shoo-in; he has won every other award leading up to the Oscars. I watched A Real Pain this week (on Hulu), and his performance was good. I haven’t seen any of the other films yet. I plan to watch Conclave before the awards show, but I’m not interested in the other movies.

This article from The Hollywood Reporter, 20 Times the Oscars Got It Wrong, got me thinking about past winners. There are some obvious choices every year, but I get a little sad some years because some outstanding performances (and movies) never get rewarded. Some actors who put a lot of work into their roles miss out on the high accolades. Of course, this is all subjective; I might like something other people hate. The Academy picks are not without controversy; I am sometimes confused by their picks. The Shape of Water? I thought there were better movies that year.

Speaking of controversy, this year, there is a lot of off-screen drama around the awards. This is a good read about some of the messiness: How the Oscar Race Got as Messy as “Conclave”
