When: Saturday February 1, 2014
Where: Kendall Square (Cambridge, MA) http://www.landmarktheatres.com/market/boston/kendallsquarecinema.htm
Kendall Square Cinema mostly shows independent or artsy movies. This theater has nine screens and is currently showing several of the Oscar nominated movies including the nominated short movies. The popcorn is freshly made and they even have frozen junior mints if you are in the mood for a treat. There is a parking garage next to the theater, be sure to get your parking validated before you leave.
The movie we saw was Nebraska with Bruce Dern. I would recommend seeing this movie if you can before the Academy Awards. The performances were impressive but you should know that the topic is a little sad. This movie highlights a somewhat complicated family and their issues. (This family is not as disturbing as the family is August Osage County.) Bruce Dern is at an advanced age and this movie deals with some issues that the elderly might face as well as how a father son relationship changes over the years.
There are a lot of restaurants near the theater. Friendly Toast is one of my favorites that has a diner like atmosphere and food choices. This particular Saturday my friend recommended we try Area Four http://areafour.com/ , a pizza place with a wood-fired oven. This restaurant was about a 10 minute walk from the theater. The layout was a giant rectangle with lots of windows on the side with the table. When you walk in there is a bar on the left and tables on your right. Our table was up a few stairs toward the back. There were several tall long tables connected and the menus were written on chalkboards on the wall.
I ordered a mushroom pizza and my friend ordered the margarita pizza. We both drank red wine by the glass. The pizza was good, you could tell the ingredients were fresh as they boast on the menu. The only issue I had was a slightly burned crust on some slices but I think that is expected when you eat wood fire cooked pizza. We had no room for dessert but the selection sounded good. I would recommend trying Area Four if you are in the Kendall Square area.
