In the beginning of June I traveled to my college to attend my 25th reunion. Yes, I graduated in 1993. I had a fun weekend catching up with friends and remembering all of the fun times we had at school.
That visit has inspired this post. I’m going to talk about the comeback of some nineties trends.
Trends from the nineties have been making their way into the fashion scene for several years now. I wrote a post about them in 2014. Some of those trends are still around: the bodysuit, overalls, and birkenstocks to name a few. Here are a few more to add to the list: chokers, scrunchies, croptops, flannels, and bandannas.
For a refresh of some popular trends, read this Insider article: http://www.thisisinsider.com/best-90s-fashion-trends-2017-8
I’m going to highlight 4 of the trends mentioned above: chokers, scrunchies, croptops, and bandanas. Feel free to work these trends into your summer wardrobe. The prices and quality of these trends depend on the retailer you purchase it from. If you aren’t sure about wearing a trend, you don’t have to spend a lot of money on it.
Trend #1: the choker
The choker has been in stores for a while and is easy to find. Most retailers including Amazon have some in their jewelry collection. Go to the website of your favorite store. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on the trend, Forever 21 has a wide range. https://www.forever21.com/us/shop/catalog/category/f21/acc_jewelry-necklace-chokers
Looking to support the creative sellers, check out Etsy. https://www.etsy.com/search?q=choker&ref=auto2&as_prefix=ch
Here is a picture of my niece Molly and I modeling some chokers:
Trend #2: the scrunchie
Scrunchies have hit the fashion scene in the last couple of years. I couldn’t believe this one made a comeback. If you watched Sex in the City, you will remember the episode where Carrie gives Berger a hard time because a character in his book walks around the streets of New York wearing a scrunchie.
Here is an article highlighting the comeback of this trend. /http://wwd.com/fashion-news/fashion-scoops/the-once-polarizing-scrunchie-makes-its-way-back-to-fashion-11083404/
Call it the hair cloud if you’re not comfortable calling it a scrunchie but you can shop for them in lots of stores including Target, Forever 21, and Amazon.
Part of the fun of this trend is that you can wear it on your wrist (look at Molly in the above picture). Here is a pic of my friend Nina working the scrunchie on the wrist at college:
Trend #3: The croptop
Croptop shirts is another easy trend to find. Women of all sizes and shapes have been embracing this trend. Search your favorite online store to find the right fit and style for you.
I like the selection at Nordstrom: https://shop.nordstrom.com/sr?origin=keywordsearch&keyword=crop+tops&typein=crop&position=1
Trend #4: the bandana
I recently came along this Who What Wear article about bandanas: https://www.whowhatwear.com/bandana-ways-to-wear
I love the versiltity of this accessory. This is also another trend that you can find in many of your favorite stores. I like Madewell’s collection: https://www.madewell.com/madewell_category/ACCESSORIES/bandanas.jsp
I bought one at Madewell and tried wearing it on my wrist.
