Notes of a Fashionista

Five on Friday

April 29, 2022

“Everything about her shimmered and glimmered softly, as if her dress had been woven out of candle-beams, and she carried her head high, like a pretty woman challenging a roomful of rivals.” The Age of Innocence (1920) by Edith Wharton

One: The Met Gala

One of the biggest yearly fashion events is happening next week, the Met Gala. This event is a fundraiser for the Costume Institute. The schedule was altered in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. This gala is an over-the-top fashion event with elaborate outfits meant to fit a yearly theme. Some critics (including Tom Ford) believe some outfits are “too much” but I enjoy seeing how celebrities choose to embrace the theme. Fashion is a form of art and should be viewed as such on the red carpet at the Met.

The 2022 Met Gala will take place on Monday 2 May in New York City. More gala info: Everything You Need to Know About the 2022 Met Gala

The 2022 dress code is“gilded glamour.” Read more about the theme and dress code in my recent blog post. https://lifestyleofafashionista.com/2022/04/29/the-met-gala-and-the-gilded-age/

Two: What to watch

New Releases:

On Netflix: The last episodes of Ozark have been released (season 4, part 2), and the documentary: Conversations with a Killer: The John Wayne Gacy Tapes

On Apple TV: Shining Girls starring Elizabeth Moss starts 4/29/22 but ends on 6/3/22, so you will have to wait if you want to binge-watch. It’s a mystery/thriller based on a 2013 novel by Lauren Beukes.

In theaters: Liam Neeson is back as an assassin in Memory. The question is, does he still have his special set of skills?

Three: What to wear

Gilded Age trends: puffy sleeves and corsets.

Corsets:

Los Angeles, CA – Hailey Baldwin leaves Justin Bieber’s hotel solo. Hailey looks trendy in sunglasses, a large black blazer, black top, light denim, and black heeled boots as she waits for her ride at valet. This is my favorite corset outfit from Emily in Paris. https://www.instyle.com/fashion/clothing/emily-in-paris-yellow-prettylittlething-outfit

Four: What to Try

A classic martini.

I came across an article this week about the classic martini trending again in NYC. https://www.grubstreet.com/2022/04/long-live-the-martini.html

The article talks about why the classic martini is popular today but it fails to distinguish which type of martini to order.

Before you attempt to order your martini, you should know the different types and then order based on your tastes. Do you prefer vodka or gin? Olive or lemon twist? Shaken or stirred? The classic martini is served with one green olive or a lemon twist. A Roosevelt has two olives. A Gibson is a standard dry martini garnished with a cocktail onion. My favorite is the Dirty Martini, with at least a teaspoon of olive brine added to the drink. Bonus points to the bar or restaurant if they serve blue cheese stuffed olives – yum!

Five: What to do

Watch the Met Gala: “Fashion fans can follow all the action on Vogue’s livestream once again for 2022. The stream will start at 6 p.m. E.T. and will be broadcast live across our digital platforms (as well as on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter). The livestream will be hosted by Vogue editor at large Hamish Bowles, actor and singer Vanessa Hudgens, and actor and television personality La La Anthony.”

In Boston: shop small. Loft & Vine is celebrating 5 years on April 30th, 12 – 6 PM. Located at 120 Salem St. https://loftandvine.com/ While you’re shopping on Salem Street be sure to check out Castaway Vintage, I Am Books, and Shake the Tree.
