Notes of a Fashionista

The world has just changed so radically, and we’re all running to catch up. I don’t want to jump to any conclusions but look… Dinosaurs and man, two species separated by 65 million years of evolution have just been suddenly thrown back into the mix together. How can we possibly have the slightest idea what to expect?” Dr. Alan Grant, Jurassic Park (1993)

One: Dinosaurs

The Study of Dinosaurs

What is Paleontology?

Paleontology is the study of ancient life, from dinosaurs to prehistoric plants, mammals, fish, insects, fungi, and even microbes. Fossil evidence reveals how organisms changed over time and what our planet was like long ago.” From the American Museum of Natural History.

Jurassic World: What do the paleontologists think?

Based on a small sample size, the “Jurassic Park” film franchise has a special place in the heart of paleontologists. This is probably why I was able to convince the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History Director Kirk Johnson and Curator of Dinosauria Matthew Carrano, both paleontologists, to come to a screening of “Jurassic World.”

The ‘Jurassic Park’ franchise got many dinosaurs wrong. The venomous Dilophosaurus was actually 20 feet long and poison-free.

Business Insider chatted with four paleontologists, including Persons, about how our understanding of the dinosaurs depicted in “Jurassic Park” has changed over time, and where the on-screen depictions diverge from the fossil record.

Why do we love dinosaurs? And movies about dinosaurs.

Read my post about my love for dinosaurs and the movies and television shows that keep us interested in these majestic creatures.

Two: What to watch

Photo: HBO

Irma Vep, started Monday, June 6th: From the Daily Beast, “In addition to being the most fun new TV show title of the summer to say out loud (Try it! Just repeat “Irma Vep” to yourself a few times. It’s a hoot!), Irma Vep boasts the promise of Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander finally in a new role worthy of her attention-grabbing talents. Everything else about it is almost too heady to pithily describe—there are meta layers cascading from this thing like the world’s most elaborate tutu. But the show is near the top of many critics’ most-anticipated lists.”

Based on the 1996 film. Hong Kong actress, Maggie Cheung playing a fictional version of herself, is cast in France to star in a remake of Les vampires (1915), but petty intrigues and clashing egos plague the production.

Peaky Blinders, Season 6: June 10. Also from the Daily Beast, “A runner-up for the TV Show Title That’s Most Fun to Say Out Loud award, Peaky Blinders is another one of those series with an obsessive cult following. This will be the sixth season, which is good news if you’re in the market for a new series to binge, specifically one that stars Cillian Murphy as a cunning crime boss in post-WWI England. It’s a niche market, but you never know!

Hustle: June 8. From IMDb: “A washed-up basketball scout discovers a phenomenal street ball player while in Spain and sees the prospect as his opportunity to get back into the NBA.” Starring Adam Sandler and Queen Latifa, with cameos from several professional basketball players.

Ms. Marvel, June 8. From the Daily Beast: “Another Marvel series would typically have us rolling our eyes so hard we’d strain an optical muscle. (Are there muscles in your eye?) But with an aesthetic that makes it seem, for once, that the superhero series is coming to life from comic-book pages and a long-overdue influx of diversity—sure-to-be breakout star Iman Vellani is the titular hero—this one actually merits the typical Marvel-universe hype. “

Apple TV:

For All Mankind, June 10. From the Daily Beast, “This is the best drama series on TV and not nearly enough of you have watched it. Fix this!” From USA Today, Why Apple TV+’s space drama ‘For All Mankind’ is the best show on TV right now

In Theaters:

Jurassic World: Dominion This summer, experience the epic conclusion to the Jurassic era as two generations unite for the first time. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are joined by Oscar®-winner Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Sam Neill in Jurassic World Dominion, a bold, timely and breathtaking new adventure that spans the globe. From Jurassic World architect and director Colin Trevorrow, Dominion takes place four years after Isla Nublar has been destroyed. Dinosaurs now live—and hunt—alongside humans all over the world. This fragile balance will reshape the future and determine, once and for all, whether human beings are to remain the apex predators on a planet they now share with history’s most fearsome creatures.

Three: What to wear

When thinking about the Jurassic Park movie collection, I can’t help but think about Bryce Dallas Howard’s character running around in heels during the whole movie. What kind of woman doesn’t have a pair of sneakers in her office or car as backup? Especially when working with dinosaurs. In my opinion, that’s not practical or realistic.

Women (and men), should always have sneakers on hand for running away from dinosaurs or to change into after work.

Four: What to Try

I’m a fan of hard-boiled eggs on toast with or without avocado. I’ll eat this combo for breakfast or lunch. My Gen-X generation has been using egg slicers for years to add eggs to our toast.

FYI: my niece Molly used my slicer to cut up strawberries.

Fast forward to 2020, when the younger generations found a new way to add eggs to toast.

Grating your hard-boiled eggs. Grated Egg Avocado Toast Is TikTok’s Latest Obsession: Here’s How to Make It.

TikTok wasn’t around when avocado toast burst onto the food scene several years ago and revolutionized breakfast and brunch as we knew it, but that hasn’t stopped users on the social media platform from creating a new version of the trendy meal that you’re going to want to try. Dubbed grated egg avocado toast, the simplest form of TikTok’s latest culinary darling is toast with sliced avocado on top, topped with a hard boiled egg that’s grated from top to bottom using a microplane.”

My attempt to grate my eggs.

My conclusion: I liked how the egg coverage was more spread out than when I added sliced eggs, but it’s not easy to grate the whole egg without making a mess.

Five: What to do

Read the books that inspired the movies: Jurassic Park (1990) The Lost World (1995) The Evolution of Claire (2018) by Michael Crichton.
