What is Ted Lasso about?

APPLE TV+

Ted Lasso came into the lives of Apple TV subscribers on August 13, 2020. Apple released three episodes that day and new episodes each week until the season’s conclusion on October 2, 2020. There are ten episodes in season one. Each episode is around 30 minutes in the first season. We meet Ted, an American college football coach hired to coach a struggling English Premier League football team (aka American soccer). Ted is famous for his quotes, can-do attitude, and biscuits. As you can imagine, his personality is a lot for the reserved British folks he’s working with within the team staff. There is more to how he ended up coaching this team and the relationships he builds with his new co-workers, but I will not spoil these things for the few readers who have yet to watch this show.

Favorite quotes from season 1:

“You know what the happiest animal on Earth is? It’s a goldfish. You know why? It’s got a 10-second memory. Be a goldfish, Sam.”

“I think that you might be so sure that you’re one in a million, that sometimes you forget that out there you’re just one in 11.”

Season 2 aired from July 23, 2021, to October 8, 2021. There are 12 episodes. The first 7 are around 30 minutes and the last five are up to 49 minutes long. The second season adds more drama to the comedy. My favorite episode is the 5th, Rainbow.

This is the best quote from season 2: “I believe in Communism. Rom-communism, that is. If Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan can go through some heartfelt struggles and still end up happy, then so can we.”

This Vulture article covers my favorite episode: Ted Lasso Has Done It Again. “It captures core elements of the show’s sensibility: its optimism, penchant for puns, and subversion of the macho bravado that has traditionally dominated shows and movies about sports.”

Why Watch Ted Lasso?

If you’ve avoided this show or don’t believe the hype, this is a good time to check out the series.

It’s a watchable comedy and a drama: there are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments and some moments that are sad. I love Ted’s quotes and puns. I also like the supporting cast. There are two strong female leads in the series.

They are an award-winning cast:

Emmy Awards: The cast won the outstanding comedy series in 2021 and 2022. Jason Sudeikis won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series in 2021 and 2022. Brett Goldstein won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2021 and 2022. Hannah Waddingham won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2021.

Screen Actors Guild Awards: Jason Sudeikis won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series in 2021 and 2022 and the cast won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series in 2022.

Season 3
