Book Clubs

3/8/24

Books are great; they let you escape the stresses of daily life and can take you to different places. I love reading, and reading is more fun when you can discuss the books you’ve read with other people. Joining a book club allows you to discuss your journey as a reader.

I’ve participated in several book clubs over the years. Sometimes, I was the person who didn’t finish the book but was at the meet-up for the wine, cheese, and gossip. I apologize to my former book club members for that discretion. I love to read, but I struggled to finish some of the picks with my busy work schedule. I’m looking at you, Love in the Time of Cholera. Some of my more casual book clubs involved reading books that turned into movies, YA fiction with friends (and my dad), and, more recently, my friend Paula and I picked books in various genres to discuss. Paula and I have read over sixty books in our group; we’ve read together, shared books, or read the same books at different times. It is fun to read books with your family and friends!

There are many ways to find a book club that works for you. Find or create an intimate reading group, or join a large online group. I will write about a few book clubs I’ve found and how to find your own.

Celebrity and Media-Run Book Clubs

Finding a new book to read can be daunting. When you walk into a bookstore, there are many choices. If you are still looking for your next read, celebrity book clubs are a great place to find one. The other benefit of a celebrity or media-run book club is they often provide questions and discussions about the book and interviews with the authors.

Here are the book clubs I’ve followed with their March picks. I love that the authors are all women, and the covers match!

Reese Witherspoon

Reese’s Book Club was created in 2017. The Complete List of Reese’s Book Club Picks. “Each month, Reese, our founder (and book-lover-in-chief) chooses a book with a woman at the center of the story. There’s not a formula to the books we spotlight, and we like it that way. We make our choices thoughtfully and look for ways to deepen our connection to books, authors and ourselves.

I attended my first silent book club in February at Trident Booksellers in Boston. They hold this event bi-weekly, the next event is on March 18th. See all the events at Trident here. Find a location near you, Find Your Local Chapter

All the seats filled up
I enjoyed a sandwich with sweet potato fries, and some tea. You can order food after you find your seat.
I was reading my book club pick. All attendees introduce themselves, talk about what they are reading before the silent reading begins.
I love an independent book store, Trident has a great selection of books and gifts, and delicious food in their cafe.

Find (or Create) a Local Book Club

I recently joined Hooked on Thrillers, a Massachusetts based book club. I’ve read three books with this group, and met up with them twice. The group meets for brunch and book discussion. We mostly talk about the current read, but often cover other books we’ve enjoyed reading. Join this group on Bookclubs.

I’ve met some great people in this group.

Joining this group introduced me to Bookclubscom. You can find a book club near you, or easily create your own. Download the app.

The Back Room

The Back Room isn’t a book club, but it is a place for writers and book lovers to meet up and chat with authors about their bestselling novels. Each online event starts with a short introduction to a panel of 4 authors. The audience is then divided into 4 breakout rooms where they remain for the rest of the program while the authors visit each room in turn. Everyone’s video is turned on and their mics are unmuted, allowing for informal, face-to-face discussion. Hosts: Karen Dionne and Hank Phillippi Ryan.

Registration is free. Follow them on Instagram.
