Saturday Street Style: Boston Seaport

When: August 24, 2013

Where: Boston Seaport

This weekend Boston hosted the Red Bull Cliff diving competition at the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Art) in the seaport area.

Here is the information about the competition from the Red Bull website:

The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2013 will follow the traditional high diving format and is a mix of the rules from FINA and HDA. Divers hand in their four planned dives the day before the first day of competition – dives shall consist of two required dives of a fixed degree of difficulty of 3.8 and two optional dives assigned a degree of difficulty computed from the HDA (High Diving Alliance) table – and are scored by five high-diving judges.

The winner of each individual tour stop is the diver with the highest points total from all four dives and the ranking in each tour stop will be awarded with points according to the table below. The winner of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2013 will be the athlete with the highest overall points after eight competitions having applied the scratch-result policy (the divers will strike their worst result, meaning that only the top seven results from each diver will count towards their overall ranking).

10 fixed divers will participate in the 2013 World Series. For each tour stop in 2013, up to four wildcard divers can be invited. This will depend on several factors (including the ranking from the qualification competition) and will be decided prior to the season. Even though wildcard divers may only compete in one or two individual events, their results will count the same as for any of the fixed divers. A diver must perform at least one dive in competition to be included in the final result.

The competition was held Sunday August 25, 2013 but I heard that the divers would be practicing on Saturday so I decided to check out their practice dives. I met up with my friend Sara and another Sarah. We stood under the platform behind the ICA. This is an impressive set up that Red Bull and the ICA has for the event. The platform is really high, about 28 meters, attached to the roof of the ICA. There were a few rescue divers in the water ready to assist the divers when after they hit the water. We watched several divers complete practice dives and we were impressed!

After watching the divers we went to Legal Seafood roof deck for drinks and sushi. This is a great spot to enjoy drinks, the spectacular view, and great people watching.

The seaport area has a lot to offer besides the beautiful views. There are several restaurants and bars as well as Louis and Mario Russo (an upscale clothing store and salon).

On my way to the seaport area I walked through the Greenway that has several vendors set up on Saturdays along with a couple of food trucks.

To finish off my Saturday, I enjoyed the restaurant week menu at Lucca.

Arugula salad, chicken dish, and chocolate dessert. Everything was delicious. Lucca is one of my favorite North End restaurants.

  1. We were at the Red Bull competition as well and went to Legal’s rooftop around 7pm that night! Guess we missed each other at both. That rooftop is really nice, but can get quite packed.
