Three: What to Wear

Sneakers to a formal event? (or in the oval office?)

Pool photo by Yuri Gripas

This past week, there was a lot of buzz about senators wearing sneakers to a meeting in the Oval Office. From the New York Times, Do Dress Sneakers Belong in the Oval Office?. “For Jim Moore, the creative director of GQ and the stylist largely responsible for Roger Federer’s impeccable swagger, a hard-soled shoe serves as a “sign of courtesy and good manners” in most formal settings.”

The rules of fashion are constantly changing. People have been dressing in more casual clothing for special events. However, after the pandemic work-from-home period ended, some people wanted to avoid getting dressed up again in uncomfortable clothes and shoes.

I am okay with relaxed dress codes, but only if the rules apply to men and women. For example, if men can wear sneakers, so should women. Caveat – the sneakers and the outfit should look nice; many stylish sneaker choices and hybrid sneaker shoes are available.

Examples of relaxed dress codes:

Prom – I’ve noticed boys wearing sneakers with their suits. The girls should put on sneakers with their dresses. From Teen Vogue, Prom Sneakers Are the New Heels — Shop the Best Styles Now.

Weddings – As a guest, sneakers are still a fashion don’t but many brides are changing into sneakers for the reception. From Vogue, Say I Do in Bridal-Worthy Sneakers—16 Perfect Pairs to Wear to Your Wedding

Cannes Film Festival – Jennifer Lawrence wore flipflops instead of heels. From Huffington Post, Jennifer Lawrence Shrugs Off Cannes’ Unofficial Dress Code With Choice Of Footwear. And Natalie Portman called out the fashion double standard women face at the events. From BuzzFeed, Natalie Portman Called Out The Double Standards Women Face At Cannes A Day Before Jennifer Lawrence Was Critiqued For Wearing Flip Flops On The Red Carpet Instead Of Heels

I’m ready for women to ditch the uncomfortable heels and embrace stylish, less painful footwear.

Four: What to Try

Pimm’s Cup:

From Liquor.com, “The Pimm’s Cup started as a health drink in 1840s London. Take a swig, and you’ll see why—its blend of mid-proof spirit with lemon, ginger and fruit is as revitalizing as cocktails can be. And its charms are especially effective on a hot day.

And a fake British accent?

From the Guardian, Why are so many young Americans adopting fake British accents?, Whether deflecting an awkward moment or lightening the mood in an argument, affecting an accent has become a Gen Z verbal tic

In Boston, volunteers placed flags in Boston Common. Since 2010, we and hundreds of volunteers have created a majestic garden of flags on Boston Common for Memorial Day weekend.  “Each of the 37,000+ flags we plant every year at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument represents every brave Massachusetts service member who gave his or her life defending our country since the Revolutionary War.
