I’ve written about basic pieces: a white button-down shirt, a blazer, black pants, and sneakers. Inspired by pictures from New York City Fashion Week, I’m writing about a few ways to elevate those basic pieces.

When you think of Fashion Week street style, you might picture some bold outfits worn by influencers and the fashion elite, but you could put together many of the looks with pieces you have in your closet.

This post will show you examples of outfits you can recreate with closet staples and will include ways to shop for some of these staples.

Elevate With Layers

Layering your essential pieces might be an obvious way to style your outfits. Still, you can elevate these layers by using different color combinations, layering a vest, or adding a sweater over your coat.
