When: Saturday February 8, 2014
Where: New York City
I always enjoy visiting New York City. I’ve been there many times over the years usually with family and friends. This particular Saturday I decided to do some exploring on my own. I had three destinations in mind: Lincoln Center, the Central Park Zoo, and Dylan’s Candy Bar.
I arrived in the city via NJ Transit bus from the Willowbrook Mall.
I walked from Port Authority to my hotel, Park Central. I was able to check in early and drop off my bag. I have nothing but good things to say about Park Central. The location is very close to many NYC points of interest. The room was spacious with two double beds and a decent sized bathroom with C.O. Bigalow products. The shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel were large sized permanently left in the bathroom. I like that idea because it produces less waste. Of course it means you can’t take home your small size leftovers but I don’t need any more small shampoos and conditioners. There is a nice restaurant and bar located behind the check in area and there is market with fresh fruit available. There is also a Starbucks and a bakery next door.
After I dropped off my bag I needed a little snack. I asked Yelp about nearby pizza places and found one called 99 cent fresh pizza. The slice cheese slice was fresh and satisfied my hunger pains.
From the pizza place I walked to Lincoln Center. Some observations I made about walking in NYC: with the snow on the ground it can be difficult to find room to walk especially if you like to walk at a fast pace, there are a lot of ice patches at inconvenient locations like corners and traffic islands (I saw one woman fall in one such dangerous area), even if you manage to pass some people they will inevitably catch up with you when the light at the next corner changes, and you can easily find what you are looking for thanks to the grid organization of the streets. Even with the ice patches and crowded sidewalks I loved walking around the city passing by landmarks and fabulous stores.
I wanted to go to Lincoln Center because it was Fashion Week. As you might have guessed, I am obsessed with Fashion Week. I love checking out what the designers show on the runways as well as the outfits of the people attending the shows through social media and fashion magazines. It would be a dream come true if I could actually attend a runway show during Fashion Week. Until that time I decided to take some pictures outside the shows. I had a great time! There were so many fun and fashionable outfits to observe!
I follow several fashion bloggers and designers on Twitter and Instagram but I didn’t recognize anyone attending the shows. I was also hoping to spot some celebrities but the only famous person I saw that day with an actor from the show Grimm (still cool because I like that show).
After I had my fill of fashionable people watching I decided to venture off to my next destination, the Central Park Zoo. I’m sure I’ve been to the zoo when I was little but I don’t remember any of those visits so I wanted to check it out again. Also, I’m reading Life of Pi right now and that has peaked my interest in zoos and I can’t remember the last time I went to a zoo. My Central Park Zoo visit was a quick one but fun. A few of the exhibits were closed for renovations. I saw the tropical animals, the monkeys, the snow leopards, the penguins, and the sea lions. Of course I stopped at the gift shop on my way out and purchased an ornament for my collection and a penguin/igloo present for my goddaughter.
My last planned stop was Dylan’s Candy Bar. Ralph Lauren’s daughter opened this store in 2001 thanks to her passion for candy, art, and design. I bought a small collection of chocolates for a birthday present as well as bought presents for my nieces and of course a few things for myself. I would recommend stopping by this store when you are in New York if you love candy or need some fun gifts for friends and family members. The second floor has a cafe with candy themed cocktails. The bottom floor has lots of fun candy clothing and accessories and the steps are filled with candy!
I did a lot of walking and needed to relax in my room for a little bit before meeting some college friends for dinner. I took the subway to my friend’s place. Another new adventure I embarked on during this trip. There was a subway stop right around the corner from my hotel. My friend lives near Union Square so I took the Q to the L.
We ordered take out and had a great time catching up. After dinner I walked to Union Square and made my way back to my hotel. I had a very nice visit to New York as always but I especially enjoyed my day of exploring.
